PLAY MONEY
Only a few hundred sets of playing pieces for CLUG have been made over the past four decades. At this time I only know the location of one, in my own closet. They have been put together in many forms and styles but all contain eight basic elements:
- A Playing Board gridded into 100 one inch square parcels in a 10 x 10 matrix is commonly used although a simple chess board will do. Foam poster board makes a cheap reusable board that readily holds pins and flags and can be marked as needed with various colored marking pens. The Lego company produces a flat plastic board covered with Lego knobs. This works well if Lego blocks are to be used as playing pieces.
- Playing pieces in three distinctive shapes to represent the three major types of land uses. We have often used 3/4 inch wooden dowels, round for Industries, square for Residences and triangular for Commercial buildings with varying heights to represent the subtypes of each land use. Lego blocks offer a useful and colorful alternative. Others have used folded Origami paper shapes and some have just written the name of the land use on a piece of paper or a poker chip
- Team Ownership can be indicated by colored pins, flag pins, plastic letters, colored paper clips, etc. The best device seems to be bingo chips with colored adhesive dots indicating the owners’ team colors.
- Primary roads can be indicated with a few thin strips of adhesive tape, balsa wood, or even toothpicks.
- Distinctive push pins or colored adhesive dots canbe used to indicate the level of municipal services.
- Probability dice are sold in many hobby shops, usually in the form of twenty sided dice. A table of random numbers can be used instead but the tension of a dice roll adds a little drama to the game.
- Eight paper forms or their equivalent in spread sheets are also needed to keep the accounts. Copies of the forms are provided here but creating a set of spread sheets able to run on any computer that might be employed is too formidable a task for me. If you really want spread sheets it seems best for you to make your own.
