You enter the game at age 29 and you will are 5 years during each round. A new round starts on Monday of each week. Most players make one set of decision for the entire round but you may make some minor changes during each weekday if you wish. You will probably retire or die after nine or ten rounds but you may continue to play if you decide to have children during your first round. You may have one child during each each of your second, third and fourth rounds, and you may enter each of other into the game as they reach the age of twenty, i.e. after you initial character has reached rounds seven, eight, and nine, respectively.
AT your first round, you have completed high school and hold a blue collar job in some local industry or business earning $20,000 per year. 9f% of that income is needed to pay for the minimum values of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. your discretionary income is $1,000 per year and your decision will determine how that is spent. Some of your decision on using discretionary time may use up some of you discretionary money
Your normal daily routine requires that you spend 8hours working, 3 hours in completing the normal tasks of daily living, and 8 hours of sleeping. This leaves you only 5 hours of discretionary time, at least one of which will be required for commuting to and from work and shopping, leaving you a maximum of four hours of discretionary time per round. You may make decisions on how to spend that time. Discretionary time may be spent on Leisure, recreation, entertainment, indulgences, or learning. These choices coupled with monetary expenditures will determine your current Quality of Life each round.
Quality of life varies from 1 to 10 where 1 is barely existing in a persistently unhappy state and ten is life as good as it gets, virtual as a continuous euphoria. A normal reasonably satisfactory existence exists when QOL is between l3 and seven.
Discretionary income may be spent, saved, or invested. Spending depends on how discretionary time is spent. Money in savings pays 1 % per year interest at current rates and is protected against any losses. Money invested pays 5% interest per year but has a 5% chane of loss each round. Money may also be invested in “risky investments” which pay 10% interest per year but have a 10% chance per round of total loss. A third alternative is “gambling” which returns 50% per year with a 80 % chance of loss of the entire about.
Other ways of spending money are: $200 per hour spent on entertainment, #100 per hour spent on recreation, $500 per hour spent on indulgences, and $200 per hour spent on learning. Each hour spent on entertainment, recreation or learning adds 1 point teach years Quality of Life. Each hour spent on indulgences adds 2 points to each years QOL. Yet another possibility is buying shares in local compaies. One share costs !% of the companu’es total value and entitles you to 1 % of its profits. Players owning more than 5% of a company have a proportional number of notes in company decisions.
Your current place of residence is at E4 where you live in a rather small walk up apartment. Your journey to work requires that you take the bus which doubles your commuting time but lowers sits cost, saving using a haf hour of your discretionary time and adding $500 to your discretionary income. Your initial Quality of Life is at 2 reflecting the carefree optimism of youth and recent High School graduates.
What do you want to do with yourself, i.e., how do you want to spent your discretionary income and discretionary time for the next five years? .
